I think most Montanans have the place gene. The battles against developers in Bozeman, Montana, are raging. They are tearing down structures with character, erecting generic high-rises that block the views of the mountains and make the sidewalks icier and windier. The majority of Bozemanites fear losing our sense of place.

I definitely have the place gene. In fact it led me to buy my home in Midtown, Ventura 22 years ago. I knew that when I retired, I wanted to stay out of the car as much as possible. The neighborhood I chose had everything I wanted.

My dog and I have different walks for different days. Some are urban walks and some are more natural—each one holds a special meaning and experience for us. Some are neighborhood walks and some require a short car ride. My dog and I have specific spots on our travels that ground us to those places and give us moments to relax and reflect. I feel fortunate.
