“Where” matters as much as ever.

Just in a different way than it used to.

Even before the pandemic, I was fascinated by what I even then called “The Future Of Where”. Proximity, location, place – these play a fundamental but often overlooked role in everything we do and in how our culture shapes itself.

But during the pandemic, everything about “where” changed. For a while, we didn’t go anywhere. Since then, we’ve increasingly gone only places we want to go, not places we have to go.

All this has incredible consequences for both how we run our society and what our everyday lives look like. So “The Future Of Where” is devoted to helping you navigate this new world.

Why “The Future Of Where” Matters to Everybody

Obviously if you are in the “place business” – urban planning, urban design, real estate development – this newsletter will give you insights into how to do your job. But if you’re just a fan of places – cities, towns, villages – I hope “The Future Of Where” will give you new insight into things you’re interested in — things like:

— How politics is being affected by location.

— How our urban economies are shifting away from old commuting patterns to a new location-based and event-based foundation.

— How the role of both cities and suburbs is changing in the post-pandemic world.

A Direct Connection Between Us

After a lifetime of writing for publications, the thing I love most about Substack is writing directly for – and to – you. There are no filters between us. So I hope you won’t just read what I write, but engage with this work as well. What is important to you about “The Future Of Where”? How do you think the world will be different in the future. For “place professionals,” how will the challenge in front of you be different?

Many of the ideas for this Substack newsletter come from readers themselves. So please comment away – or reach out to me directly at bill@williamfultongroup.com.

And don’t forget: Because there is no filter between us, there’s no advertising, no funder with an agenda, nothing like that. Just me writing for you. So in order to support this work, please consider becoming a subscriber. You’ll get access to more content – and you’ll help make sure that we are still here as “The Future Of Where” unfolds.
